Statistics show in the US, over 3 million students are bullied a year. And that’s just reported cases. Moreover, bullying is most common between 5th and 8th grade, and about one in ten students will drop out of school due to bullying. Students are suffering in places where they should be learning. Therefore, it is imperative that they are provide with skills in order to avoid a bully and to know what to do if they are attacked (verbally, physically, or virtually (i.e. cyber-bullying)).
Karate teaches children confidence and respect. One of the first things taught is a polite greeting: looking one in the eye, shaking hands, etc. Projecting confidence is an excellent way to avoid being an easy target.
Further, we provide the students with scenarios to use their mind on how to avoid a physical situation.
General Rules:
- Avoid the fight.
- If a bully calls you a mean name, do not use your karate. Instead, go tell a trusted adult/teacher.
- If a bully uses physical force to hurt your body, use your self defense then immediately go tell a trusted adult/teacher.
No child should fear going to school. While bullying remains a harsh reality of children’s lives, it is important we provide our children will every tool necessary to ensure school is strictly an area of learning, positivity, and growth.
